Boxing Saskatchewan Shows Up at 2024 Hennessey Holdings Elite and U23 National Championships in Sarnia, ON
Regina, SK – The 2024 Hennessey Holdings Elite and U23 National Championships were held November 20-23rd at the Royal SCITS Academy in Sarnia, ON. This Olympic-style boxing competition brought together outstanding athletes from across the country who represent the best of their clubs and provinces.
Saskatchewan attended the competition with one of the largest teams in recent history – with nine athletes representing clubs from across the province, as well as three coaches who worked with these athletes in training camps and at the event. The dedication and passion of these athletes resulted in five bronze medals for Saskatchewan.
This exceptional performance is further appreciated when it’s considered in the context of the population and number of boxing clubs in Saskatchewan compared to much larger and more populated provinces.
Our Bronze Medalists this year include Noah Essien of New Line Boxing Academy (Regina), Jessica Caverly of Lloydminster Boxing Club (Lloydminster). Khizar Hashmi and Kyle Paposi of Kopas Boxing Club (Saskatoon) and Rabil Issa of Alliance Boxing Club (Saskatoon). The remaining boxers on this team who showed up and gave everything they had are Cole Ahenakew and Devon Masuskapoe of Red Wolf Boxing Club (Prince Albert) and Maldini Istifo and Jaden Toye of Alliance Boxing Club (Saskatoon). Team Coaches were Gary Kopas (Kopas Boxing Club), Vikki Fairweather (Alliance Boxing Club) and Moses Just Moses (New Line Boxing Academy).
With Canada’s Wyatt Sanford breaking a 28-year drought and achieving Bronze in Boxing at the most recent Olympics, this National Championship showed that this generation of Canadian boxers are committed, high-level athletes that will return to the Olympic podium in the future.
The opening day featured preliminary bouts across multiple weight classes. The competition narrowed to the Finals, which were held on Saturday, November 23rd.
